Why Pool Deck Coatings Crack — and What Spanish Marble Does Differently
This is a coated pool deck here in Southwest Florida. Look at the line running through it. That is not a stain and it is not dirt. The coating has split open, and the bare concrete underneath is showing through white.
A coating is paint. That is the whole product.

Most pool deck resurfacing quotes in Florida are coatings. A sprayed or troweled layer a millimetre or two thick, tinted to look like stone, then sealed on top. It is cheap to buy and fast to put down, and that is exactly why those quotes come in low.
But a coating does not fix anything. It is a skin. It bonds to the concrete slab underneath and it moves with that slab. Florida ground shifts, concrete expands in the heat, and when the slab cracks the coating cracks with it — straight through, along the same line.

Here is that same deck up close. You can see how little material there actually is where it has opened up. That thin speckled layer is the entire product — sitting on top of the problem, not solving it.
Sealed means the water has nowhere to go
A coating is sealed. That gets sold to you as a feature, and it is also the flaw. Rain and splash-out sit on the surface until they evaporate or run off the edge. Around a pool that means standing water, slick spots underfoot, and staining where puddles dry.
It gets worse once there is a crack. Moisture works in through the split or around an edge and then cannot get back out. It sits between the coating and the slab. Under Florida sun it turns to vapour, pushes upward, and lifts the coating away in sheets.
Spanish Marble is not a coating. It is a resurfacing.
Spanish Marble Resin-Bound is natural aggregate stone — real quarried marble, graded and washed — bound in resin and laid at depth over your existing deck. It is not painted on. It is a new surface.
Because it is built from stone with space between each piece, it is permeable. Water passes straight through it and drains into the ground. No puddles, no standing water at the pool edge, and no trapped moisture pushing up from below to lift the surface off.
The stone is the colour. It is not tinted or printed on, so it does not fade to a different shade after a few Florida summers. And because the aggregate is laid with real depth instead of sprayed on as a skin, it holds together where a thin coating splits.
What this means when you are comparing quotes
If two quotes are far apart, they are usually not the same job. One is a coating — paint and sealer over the deck you already have, with everything that is wrong with it still sitting underneath. The other is a resurfacing.
The coating is the cheaper number today. The deck in these photos is what that number costs you a few years later.
