Why Floor Prep Is the Most Important Step in Pool Deck Resurfacing
The finished marble gets all the attention. But what decides whether your pool deck lasts 20 years or fails in two happens before a single stone goes down. On a real job in Punta Gorda, here is what floor prep actually looks like — and why skipping it is the most expensive shortcut in this business.

Why Prep Decides Everything
Resin-bound Spanish marble bonds to whatever is underneath it. If that surface is dirty, holding standing water, or draining nowhere, the bond fails — no matter how good the stone is. Most pool deck failures we get called to fix trace back to one thing: the prep was rushed or skipped entirely. This is also why cheap coatings crack and peel. A coating seals water in. Proper prep gives water a way out.
Our Floor Prep Steps
Step 1 — Pressure wash the entire deck. This is not just cleaning. A thorough wash reveals ponding: the low spots where water sits that you cannot see on a dirty deck.
Step 2 — Mark every ponding spot. Each low area gets marked so nothing is missed. If water collects there now, it will collect under your new surface later.
Step 3 — Drill drainage at the marks. On paver decks, we drill drainage holes through the pavers at each marked spot before the marble goes down. Water needs somewhere to go.
Step 4 — Lay the marble on a clean, level, draining surface. Only then does the Spanish marble go down — bonding to a deck that is ready to hold it for decades.
Why This Matters More in Punta Gorda
Charlotte County gets hammered by afternoon storms half the year, and most pool decks here sit on pavers over sand — a combination that shifts, settles, and ponds. A surface that cannot drain is a surface that will not last here. When you are comparing quotes in Punta Gorda, ask every contractor to walk you through their prep steps. If they cannot, that tells you everything.
